Whether you’re ready for it or not fall is approaching and although many people believe that pests disappear when the temperatures drop, that’s a myth. In fact, many pests are actually more active during the fall season! So how do you help prevent them from getting inside your home? With help from Pioneer Pest Management!
We’ve developed some quick and easy ways to help prepare your home for fall pests.
1. Seal Cracks and Crevices
Walk the perimeter of your home and look for any small cracks and crevices. Pay particular attention to where utility lines meet your home in addition to window sills and door frames. Seal any gaps using steel wool or silicone-based caulk. These materials are best, especially with rodents.
2. Replace Weather Stripping
If the weather stripping around your door is damaged or has missing chunks, you’ll want to replace it. Another good sign to consider replacing your weather stripping is if you can see light shining through when you close your door. Replacing your weather stripping will not only help keep pests out but it will also help keep cold drafts out.
3. Add Screens to Openings
Insects and roof rats commonly use vents and soffits to gain entry into homes. Screen vents, soffits, chimneys, and other openings to help keep pests out.
4. Eliminate Clutter
Spiders and rodents are attracted to areas where they will go undisturbed like garages, basements, and crawl spaces. Declutter these areas and consider storing your belongings in plastic contains with lids to help prevent a surprise later.
5. Manage Your Landscape
Just like clutter, pests, especially rats and mice are attracted to areas where they will go undetected. Overgrown shrubs and tall grass can serve as harborages for pests and make it easier to get inside your home.
6. Maintain Cleanliness
One of the biggest things you can do to help prevent a pest infestation is to keep clean. Don’t let clothes and junk pile up around your home. Wipe countertops, take out the trash regularly, seal food properly, and he’s a big one–repair water leaks. Like us, pests need water to survive. Cockroaches, ants, earwigs, rats, and more! You don’t want all of these pests in your home, right?
