If you think now that summer is over, you won’t have to deal with pests–think again! As the days get shorter and the temperatures get cooler, many pests, including mice and rats, will start looking for places to wait out winter.
Here are some common fall pests in the Pacific Northwest.
Stink bugs are a common nuisance pest in the fall. When they feel threatened, they’ll emit a very foul odor. Stink bugs aren’t dangerous to humans, but they can damage your plants and fruits. If you find a stink bug in your home, trap it or vacuum it, then dispose of the contents immediately.
Cockroaches are very adaptable, but they don’t survive in extremely hot or cold temperatures. In the fall, cockroaches will often make their way into homes for warmth. These pests are known to hide near drains, pipes, and other damp areas. They can spread diseases including Salmonellosis and exacerbate allergy symptoms.
Rodents are one of the most common fall pests. They will seek shelter indoors in search of food, warmth, and safety. Rats and mice can carry diseases, cause structural damage, and bring fleas, ticks, and lice into your home. Rodents are also known to chew on electrical fires, causing potential fire hazards.
People commonly encounter spiders in the fall, but it isn’t because they’re looking for warm shelter; spiders breed in the fall. Spiders may also move indoors as their prey migrates inside. Most spiders are generally harmless and won’t bite unless provoked.
