Keeping Boxelder Bugs Out This Winter
In Fall as the weather starts to cool down in the evening and the days are sunny and slightly warmer boxelder bugs gather in very large amounts on the exterior of homes. It is during this time they like to come inside our homes for warmth and overwinter. Boxelder bugs can be a real headache for anyone that has Elder, Maple or Ash trees near their property. Taking a few preventative measures now can help keep your home pest-free.
Do Boxelder Bugs Cause Harm?
While not destructive, boxelder bugs are a nuisance pest. Their colonies are enormous. Once inside a structure they leave an abundance of excrement which can leave red stains, resulting in discoloration of curtains, drapes, clothing and other resting areas. When crushed they produce an unpleasant odor that can seep throughout infested homes.
Check Your Window and Door Screens
To help prevent boxelder bugs from entering your home or property, repair any damaged screens, including screens in windows, doors and vents such as roof and exhaust vents. You will also want to use sweeps and weatherstripping to repair gaps around doors and windows.
Check for Holes
Check for and seal holes in spots where cables, plumbing or utilities connect to your home. Windowsills, roof eaves/soffits and spots where two types of materials meet, like brick and siding, should be checked as well. Fix any loose siding where insects can slip in.
Treat Your Trees
If you have not already removed boxelder trees on your property, consider doing so. If you do not want to or cannot, examine the trees and shrubs for boxelder bug swarms. Trees that appear bug-free can be thoroughly hosed down to be on the safe side. Make sure to hit the underside of the leaves. If you spot a swarm, call Pioneer Pest for boxelder extermination.
For further precaution, you can begin sprinkling a line of diatomaceous earth (DE) in all of your windowsills. DE works by damaging the exoskeleton and killing any insect that treads across it. Vacuum up any dead bugs you find.
